Joey Hauser named Big EAST Freshman of the Week

Seton Hall guard Myles Powell and Marquette forward Joey Hauser have won weekly basketball honors. Powell was named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Hauser was chosen BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Both players helped their teams to 2-0 weeks that included a victory over a ranked opponent on Saturday.

BIG EAST Player of the Week

Myles Powell, Seton Hall, G, Jr. – Powell scored 28 points in an 84-83 overtime win against No. 9 Kentucky in the Citi Hoops Classic at Madison Square Garden. The junior guard propelled the Pirates by scoring 25 of his 28 points after halftime. He connected on five 3-pointers in the final 5:27 of regulation and hit another 3-pointer in the extra period. Powell also scored 10 points while playing 20 minutes in a 77-57 win against New Hampshire. The junior leads the BIG EAST in scoring with a 23.0 average.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

Joey Hauser, Marquette, F, Fr. – Hauser averaged 15.0 points in a 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles that included a 74-69 overtime triumph over No. 12 Wisconsin. He scored 15 points against the Badgers and also had 15 points in a 76-69 win against UTEP. For the two games, Hauser made 10-of-13 shots from the field (.769), including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The 6-9 forward is averaging 10.7 ppg.

BIG EAST Honor Roll

Paul Jorgensen, Butler, G, Sr. 

Averaged 17.5 points and made 50 percent from 3-point range in victories over Brown (70-55) and Northern Illinois (95-68).

Femi Olujobi, DePaul, F, Sr.

Averaged 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Shot 81.8 percent from the floor (14-19). Had 22 points and eight boards in a loss at Northwestern (75-68).

Jessie Govan, Georgetown, C, Sr.

Averaged 25.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. Had 22 points and 12 boards in a one-point loss at Syracuse (72-71).

Markus Howard, Marquette, G, Jr.

Scored 27 points in a 74-69 OT win over No. 12 Wisconsin. Had 21 points in victory against UTEP (76-69).

Shamorie Ponds, St. John’s, G, Jr.

Averaged 18.5 points and shot 56.0 percent from the field in a 2-0 week. Also averaged 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in wins over Mount St. Mary’s (85-71) and Princeton (89-74).
