Brewers sign Justin Smoak, Eric Sogard to one-year contracts

On Friday, the Milwaukee Brewers announced that they signed infielder Eric Sogard and first baseman Justin Smoak to one-year contracts, each with a club option for 2021.

Sogard, 33, played in 110 games between Toronto and Tampa Bay last season, hitting .290 with a career-high 13 home runs. In his run with Milwaukee from 2017 to 2018, Sogard batted .234 in 412 plate appearances, with an OPS of .669. Sogard appeared at second, third, short, and the corner outfield spots in 2019.

Smoak, 33, a former first-round pick of Texas in 2008, has played 10 years in the majors, with five years each in Toronto and Seattle as well as a short stint with Texas early in his career. The 2017 All-Star batted just .208 in 2019 with Toronto, but held an OPS of .748, slightly above his career OPS of .744. Smoak also hit 22 home runs last year, and has hit 191 in 1,250 career games.

In 2019, the two players were teammates in Toronto. The Brewers open up the 2020 season March 26 against the Chicago Cubs.
