Mack Keryluk and Leo Renlund each netted two goals to power Verona past Eau Claire North 5-1 in a state boy's hockey quarterfinal on Thursday afternoon.
Eau Claire North drew first blood, as Joey Koller scored for the Huskies midway through the first period. It was the first power play goal allowed by Verona in the playoffs. From there, however, it was all Wildcats.
First came a short-handed goal in the same power play, as Keryluk evened the game just past the midway point of the opening frame. Then, a huge Walker Haessig score with just 23 seconds left in the first period gave Verona a big shot of momentum and a 2-1 lead heading into first intermission.
In the second period, Verona absolutely blistered the nets. The Wildcats put 24 shots on goal in period number two (to just five for Eau Claire North) and picked up two Leo Renlund goals, both of which were scrums in front of the net. Keryluk added his second goal only 30 seconds into the third period to put the game out of reach.
Verona will face top-seeded University School on Friday at 4 p.m. in the state semifinal.
