Softball: Monroe out-slugs Edgewood in 8-3 victory

Olivia Bobak took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and the Monroe Cheesemakers smacked five home runs in an 8-3 win over Edgewood on Tuesday afternoon at Goodman Park Diamond.

Bobak lost her no-hitter in the bottom of the sixth when Olivia Moore laid down a bunt for a single. The next batter, Moore's sister Madison, hit a three-run home run as part of a stretch of four straight hits for the Crusaders, their only offense of the contest.

Monroe got on the board when Bobak doubled in Sydney Updike in the top of the first inning. Kate Hayes led off the top of the second with her second home run of the season, and three batters later, Sarah Prien launched her first homer of the 2019 campaign to put Monroe up 3-0.

After the teams traded scoreless innings in the third and fourth, the Cheesemakers got back-to-back home runs, a two-run shot from Updike and a solo blast from Bobak, to extend their lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth.

Bobak mowed down Crusaders hitters in the middle innings, fanning eight batters from the second through fifth innings, and had nine total punchouts on the game.

After the Crusaders got their offense going in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead in half, to 6-3, Monroe's Hayes hit her second home run of the game, a two-run homer, in the top of the seventh to give the Cheesemakers some insurance runs.

Monroe piled up 15 hits and five home runs in the win, while Edgewood got all of their three runs and four hits with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Edgewood is a #2 seed in Sectional 3 and will face the winner of Reedsburg and Mauston next Tuesday at Goodman Park Diamond. In the other half-sectional, Monroe is a #3 seed and faces #6 Turne on Tuesday at Dale Buvid Field in Twining Park, Monroe.
