Verona's extra-innings win to earn a regional title over defending state champion Waunakee, and Janesville Parker taking down cross-town rival and the #1 team in the state Janesville Craig, were among the highlights of Thursday night's regional final action in baseball.
In Division 1, Sectional 3, #9 Verona needed 11 innings to take down #1 Waunakee, the defending champion, 1-0. Verona will face #5 Madison Memorial, 9-5 winners over #4 Middleton, in the Super Tuesday sectional at Middleton next week. On the bottom half of the bracket, #3 Madison West blasted intra-city rival #11 Madison East 15-5 to advance. The Regents will see #2 Sun Prairie, 3-1 winners over #7 DeForest, in the second game of the Super Tuesday sectional at Middleton next week. The winners of those two games will advance to the sectional final at Middleton at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday night.
Over in Sectional 5, #9 Janesville Parker scored a 1-0 win over #1 Janesville Craig, their in-city rival and the top-rated team in the state. The Viking will face #4 Milton, winners over perennial power #5 Arrowhead 8-1, in the first game of the Super Tuesday sectional at Oconomowoc. The winner will then see the winner of Oconomowoc and Hamilton in the sectional final at 4:00 p.m. in Oconomowoc.
