WIAA State Football Tournament advances to Level 2

Statewide, there were a number of upsets based on seeding, and Level 2 shapes up with some interesting games as the WIAA State Football Tournament continues to Level 2.

Division 1 had four such upsets, including three #6 seeds getting wins. D.C. Everest won a high-scoring game over Appleton East 47-41, while Sun Prairie defeated Verona for the second time this season with a 51-28 rout. Milwaukee Marshall edged Milwaukee King 16-14 as well. The only bracket that went chalk was the southeastern Wisconsin group, where defending champion Muskego will entertain Mukwonago in Level 2, and Kenosha Indian Trail will visit Franklin. Other top match-ups for the next round include #4 Neenah at #1 Kimberly, Sun Prairie at #2 Fond du Lac, and #4 Middleton at #1 Madison Memorial, which will air on The Big 1070 in Madison and on iHeartRadio.

Division 2 only had one minor upset based on seeding, #5 Holmen upending #4 Watertown 36-10. Top seeds hosting Level 2 games: Pulaski gets Superior, Holmen heads to Hartford, and then two huge rivalry games on tap in the southern part of the state. Waterford will host Burlington, while Brookfield East will play at Brookfield Central. Other top match-ups include Homestead at Menomonee Falls and Kaukauna at Hortonbille. Badger South co-champ Milton will get a huge test playing at Waunakee.

In Division 3, the number-one seeds asserted their will, but there were also a number of upsets below the top line. In the northwestern part of the state, there were no such upsets. Future Big Rivers Conference member New Richmond will travel to Menomonie in a game heard on iHeartRadio and WMEQ, while River Falls heads to Medford in a pair of very interesting games in the northern part of Wisconsin. To the east, Grafton and Fox Valley Lutheran both got road wins, and their reward is respectively to play at West De Pere and Menasha. The Milwaukee area will see a battle for New Berlin as Eisenhower takes on West, as West won the earlier meeting this year. Finally, Pewaukee will visit Plymouth. South-central Wisconsin saw a #7 seed advance, with Monroe holding off Onalaska to move on to play Badger South co-champ Stoughton. Top-seeded Badger North champion DeForest will play conference foe Reedsburg in a rematch of a game won by the Norskies 28-0 earlier this year.

Only one significant upset occurred in Division 4, where Winneconne got past second-seeded Sheboygan Falls 22-14. Of the remaining games, the most intriguing appears to be Edgerton at River Valley, two teams with loads of success in the regular season.

The bottom half of the Division 5 bracket was relatively stable, and one interesting match-up will be Cedar Grove-Belgium taking on defending D4 champion Racine St. Catherine's on Friday. The top half of Division 5 had three upsets in the eight games based on seeding, with the only match-up as drawn up on the bracket being Aquinas at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau.

Division 6 is loaded, and featured four road teams winning out of the 16 Level 1 match-ups, highlighted by Coleman's 40-0 win over Bonduel. In the southeastern part of the state, St. Mary's Springs hosts Cambridge while Racine Lutheran gets Johnson Creek, and if the home teams win, would pair two teams who played at Camp Randall Stadium last fall. The upper half of the bracket saw two #5 seeds get wins, and their reward is to take on two of the projected top teams in the division: Colby will play at Cloverbelt rival Regis and Darlington will make the trek north to Mondovi. Of note, Mineral Point and Lancaster will rematch in Level 2 after meeting just a couple of weeks ago (Mineral Point won handily).

Division 7 featured relatively few upsets, with only three road teams advancing. The division's "big three" of Edgar, Bangor, and Black Hawk/Warren all won easily.

8-Player football saw every #1 seed advance, but three #2 seeds went down. In the state quarterfinals, Luck, Newman Catholic, Shell Lake, and Belmont will all host games.
