Verona wins Division 1 boys soccer championship

Eliot Popkewitz and Jonathan Gamez scored the goals for Verona, as the Wildcats defeated Neenah 2-0 to win the Division 1 WIAA State Boys Soccer Championship on Saturday in Milwaukee.

Popkewitz's goal came at the 13' mark of the match, while Gamez added an unassisted goal at 86' to clinch the title for Verona.

Popkewitz also had a goal in the semifinal win over Kenosha Tremper, as did Jack Knight and Gannon Simonett, who assisted on the first Verona goal in the championship match.

It's Verona's first-ever boys soccer championship in their first-ever appearance in the state tournament. The Wildcats also won the Big 8 championship for the second year in a row in 2019.
