WIAC Basketball Tournament Update: February 23

The WIAC Men's Basketball Tournament begins semifinal play tonight, while the women's Tournament featured a big upset in the opening round.

Women's Basketball - WIAC Tournament First Round: #6 River Falls (9-17) 47, #3 Stevens Point (17-9) 43

Taylor Paulsrud's layup with four seconds to go broke the tie and helped the Falcons earn an upset over the Pointers. Stevens Point was held to just 27.5% shooting, including 5.9% from deep, and got only 23 points from their starters in the loss. Kate Thiesen of River Falls led all scorers with 16 points.

River Falls will face #1 Oshkosh on Friday night at 7pm. Stevens Point, 8th in the central region NCAA rankings, will likely be off the bubble for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

Women's Basketball - WIAC Tournament First Round: #4 La Crosse (16-10) 69, #5 Eau Claire (13-13) 57

Eau Claire shot just 18.5% in the first half and scored only four points in the first quarter, falling on the road to the Eagles. La Crosse scored 45 second-half points and led by as many as 21 points in their win. Sydney Kannel paced the Eagles with 23 points.

La Crosse will take on #2 Whitewater on Friday night at 7pm. Eau Claire's season is concluded.

Tonight, it's the men's semifinals.

Men's Basketball - WIAC Tournament Semifinals - #5 La Crosse (14-12) at #1 River Falls (22-3)

Regular Season Series: River Falls swept, winning 91-76 on January 18 in La Crosse and 75-59 on February 1 in River Falls.

Men's Basketball - WIAC Tournament Semifinals - #3 Whitewater (21-5) at #2 Oshkosh (16-9)

Regular Season Series: Whitewater won in Oshkosh on January 18, 73-67, but Oshkosh won the rematch in Whitewater on February 15, 67-63.
